In these publications we will explore all the advantages and characteristics of this type of fiber.<\/p>\n<p>Mainly made of <strong>cellulose<\/strong>, plant fibers can be obtained from different parts of the plant (pods, seeds, stems etc) and represent an <strong>eco-friendly and healthy alternative<\/strong> to synthetic fibers.<\/p>\n<p>Plant fibers have been used since ancient times by all populations: the Egyptians used to make linen garments and fabrics, while the favorite material of China and India was cotton.<\/p>\n<p>The latter is the protagonist of this article. <strong>Read on to discover its origin and all its uses<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>COTTON<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Nowadays the most widely used plant fiber in the world is the one coming from cotton hulls: more than <strong>30 million tons<\/strong> per year are produced, mainly grown in <strong>Asia, Africa and America<\/strong>. In the textile industry, cotton finds many adaptations: from mercerized to combed, from twisted to mak\u00f2 up to the blend of several types that give life to yarns of different consistency and yield in the production of fabrics and garments.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30890 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lanagatto.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/AdobeStock_110996960-scaled.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"797\" height=\"531\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lanagatto.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/AdobeStock_110996960-scaled.jpeg 2560w, https:\/\/www.lanagatto.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/AdobeStock_110996960-200x133.jpeg 200w, https:\/\/www.lanagatto.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/AdobeStock_110996960-768x512.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.lanagatto.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/AdobeStock_110996960-1536x1024.jpeg 1536w, https:\/\/www.lanagatto.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/AdobeStock_110996960-2048x1365.jpeg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 797px) 100vw, 797px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The main <strong>characteristics<\/strong> that make cotton so versatile are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Comfort<\/li>\n<li>Easy to print and dye<\/li>\n<li>High breathability and moisture absorption<\/li>\n<li>Duration and resistance<\/li>\n<li>Hypoallergenic<\/li>\n<li>Eco-friendly and biodegradable<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>These qualities make cotton perfect to produce not only <strong>garments<\/strong>, but also <strong>household linens<\/strong>, <strong>medical products<\/strong> (such as bandages, gauze, cotton wool etc) and <strong>industrial products<\/strong> (nets, ropes, tarps etc). The yield of the finished product depends on the whole productive flow: from the moment of the harvest to the spinning methods up until the weaving and dyeing techniques, everything helps <strong>improve the quality<\/strong> of the finished item.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-30895 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lanagatto.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/AdobeStock_223452025-scaled.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"798\" height=\"528\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lanagatto.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/AdobeStock_223452025-scaled.jpeg 2560w, https:\/\/www.lanagatto.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/AdobeStock_223452025-200x132.jpeg 200w, https:\/\/www.lanagatto.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/AdobeStock_223452025-768x509.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.lanagatto.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/AdobeStock_223452025-1536x1017.jpeg 1536w, https:\/\/www.lanagatto.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/AdobeStock_223452025-2048x1356.jpeg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 798px) 100vw, 798px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The best-known <strong>types of cotton<\/strong> fiber are the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Egyptian Cotton<\/strong>, well-known for its long fibers, which make it extremely soft and lasting. We love Egyptian Cotton too, in fact we use it in our <strong>cotton summer yarns<\/strong> such as <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lanagatto.it\/en\/collection\/milo\/\">Milo<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lanagatto.it\/en\/collection\/cable-5\/\">Cable 5<\/a><\/strong>and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lanagatto.it\/en\/collection\/nuovo-jaipur\/\">Nuovo Jaipur<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Pima Cotton<\/strong>, native to Peru, but currently grown all over the world, it withstands well peeling ad washing<\/li>\n<li><strong>Upland Cotton<\/strong>: the most common cotton thanks to its ease of growth, but not as fine as its fellows because of its shorter fibers, so the final product is less soft and resistant.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Sea Island Cotton<\/strong>, known for its long silky fibers which make it luxurious and requested globally. It grows in the area of the Caribbean Sea.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>One of the most valuable cotton yarns is <strong>combed cotton<\/strong>: its production process involves a <strong>special treatment<\/strong> in which <strong>the shortest and most fragile fibers are cut off<\/strong> during the combing process. It results in a soft and superior quality yarn compared to traditional ones. Combed fibers are also firmer after being pressed, which guarantees more resistance to the finished product.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>mercerization of cotton<\/strong>, which raises the quality of the yarn, is a process that was born in 1844 thanks to John Mercer (hence the term &#8220;mercerized&#8221;) and that changes the structure of the cells of cotton in reaction to caustic soda.
