Jar with heart, a gift for Valentine’s Day

Celebrate Valentine’s day with a special gift! An original jar with heart, to be crocheted easily and quickly.

Materials

1 ball of Calicò yarn for each of next colors: red, green, ecru, mustard
A 3.25mm crochet hook
Yarn needle with rounded point
A stitch-marker
Polyester padding
Iron wire in the desired size
A jar
A red bow
A bead
Vinyl glue (optional)

 

Stitches

  • Chain (ch)
  • Slip stitch (ss)
  • Double crochet (dc)
  • Half Treble (htr)
  • Treble (tr)
  • Double treble (dtr)
  • Crab stitch: this is dc worked from left to right. Start at the left-hand end of the row you are working, insert the hook in the first st to the right and complete a dc stitch. Repeat in the next st to the right and continue to the end of the row.

 

INSTRUCTIONS

Work spiral dc in continuous rounds, excluding leaves and stem. Do not close every round and place 1 stitch-marker at beg of each round.

Heart

FIRST CIRCLE: With a 3.25mm hook and red yarn make a magic ring and, into this ring, work spiral in continuous rounds as follows:
1st round: 6 dc, pull yarn to close round.
2nd round: inc 1 st in each st of previous round (inc = work 2 dc in each st). There are 12 dc.
3rd round: * 1 dc into next st, 1 inc (= 2 dc) into following st; rep from * all around: there are 18 dc.
4th and 5th round: 1 dc into each st of previous round. Fasten off.

SECOND CIRCLE: Work as given for First circle

but, at end of 5th round, do not fasten off. Now join the two circles as follows:
6th round: 1 joining dec (= 2 dc joined together, whose the first dc into next st on Second Circle and the second dc into the st after the last on First Circle), then work 17 dc around First Circle and 18 dc around Second Circle, 1 joining dec into corresponding 2 sts on two Circles, as previous but on opposite side.
7th and 8th round: 1 dc into each st of two circles: there are 36 dc.
9th round: * 7 dc, 1 dec (= dc2tog:insert hook in a stitch, yarn on hook and pull a loop through, insert hook in next stitch, yarn on hook and pull a loop through, yarn on hook and pull through the 3 loops on the hook); rep from * all around: 32 dc remain.
10th round: * 6 dc, 1 dec; rep from * all around: 28 dc remain.
11th round: * 5 dc, 1 dec; rep from * all around: 24 dc remain.
12th round: * 4 dc, 1 dec; rep from * all around: 20 dc remain.

13th round: * 3 dc, 1 dec; rep from * all around: 16 dc remain. Commence to insert padding into this part just worked.
14th round: * 2 dc, 1 dec; rep from * all around: 12 dc remain.
15th round: * 1 dc, 1 dec; rep from * all around: 8 dc remain.
Cut yarn. Complete padding. Remove loop on hook, fasten off and sew stitch with tarn needle.

Stem

With hook and green yarn cover iron wire working dc all along stem. Fasten off

Leaves

Make 2. With hook and green yarn, for each leaf ch8 and, starting from 2nd ch from hook, work 1 dc, 1 htr, 1 tr, 1 dtr, 1 tr, 1 htr, 3 dc into last ch and cont to work on opposite side with 1 htr, 1 tr, 1 dtr, 1 tr, 1 htr and 1 dc. Fasten off.

Jar coating

With mustard yarn make a magic ring and, into this ring, work spiral in continuous rounds as follows:
1st round: 6 dc, pull yarn to close round.
2nd round: inc 1 st in each st of previous round (inc = work 2 dc in each st). There are 12 dc.
3rd round: * 1 dc into next st, 1 inc (= 2 dc) into following st; rep from * all around: there are 18 dc.
4th round: * 1 dc into each of next 2 sts, 1 inc into following st; rep from * all around: there are 24 dc.
5th round: * 1 dc into each of next 3 sts, 1 inc into following st; rep from * all around: there are 30 dc.
6th round: * 1 dc into each of next 4 sts, 1 inc into following st; rep from * all around: there are 36 dc.
7th round: * 1 dc into each of next 5 sts, 1 inc into following st; rep from * all around: there are 42 dc.
Cont to work in continuous rounds, increasing as given on previous rounds until to cover jar bottom,

then continue without increasing until to cover jar height.

Jar cover

With ecru yarn work as Jar coating until 7th round made.

FINISHING

Insert stem into heart point and, on opposite end, into centre of jar cover: if it needs, fix it with the glue.

With hook and mustard yarn join cover to jar coating, working a round of dc and a round of crab st. As shown in picture, join leaves to stem and fix bow with bead under heart point.
