Crochet chick, decorate your home for Easter

Egg hatches and an adorable crochet chick pop up to wish Happy Easter! Here is our special project for the upcoming festivity. Two chicks, a girl and a boy, are inside a pastel striped half eggshell. She has a pink bow, he has a lime bow tie. Follow instructions and create cheerful decorations for your home and table.

How to work a pair of decorative chicks

MATERIALS AND STITCHES

For our chicks we will prepare:

milo - labelMilo yarn, a small amount for each of following colors: yellow, orange, white, green, light blue, pink, and lime.
A 2.25mm crochet hook
A yarn needle with rounded point
A stitch-marker
4 small black beads (for eyes)
Wadding for stuffing
Hair spray

 

We will then use these stitches with their respectively abbreviations:

  • Chain (ch)
  • Slip stitch (ss)
  • Double crochet (dc)
  • Half treble (htr)
  • Treble (tr)
  • Double treble (dtr)

THE CHICKS INSTRUCTIONS

Head, body, and eggshell

Girl chick. With hook and yellow yarn make a magic ring. Into this ring work as follows:
round 1: 6 dc. Pull yarn to close ring.
Round 2: 2 dc in each st of previous round. There are 12 sts.
Round 3: * 2 dc into next st, 1 dc into next st; rep from *. There are 18 dc.
Round 4: * 2 dc into next st, 1 dc into each of next 2 sts; rep from *. There are 24 dc.

Round 5: * 2 dc into next st, 1 dc into each of next 3 sts; rep from *. There are 30 dc.
Round 6: 1 dc into each st of previous round.
Round 7: * 2 dc into next st, 1 dc into each of next 4 sts; rep from *. There are 36 dc.
Round 8: 1 dc into each st of previous round.
Round 9: * 2 dc into next st, 1 dc into each of next 5 sts; rep from *. There are 42 dc.
Round 10: 1 dc into each st of previous round.
Round 11: * 2 dc into next st, 1 dc into each of next 6 sts; rep from *. There are 48 dc.
Round 12: 1 dc into each st of previous round.
Round 13: * 2 dc into next st, 1 dc into each of next 7 sts; rep from *. There are 54 dc.
Rounds 14-19: 1 dc into each st of previous round.
Round 20: * dc2tog, 1 dc into each of next 7 sts; rep from *. 48 dc remain.
Round 21: * dc2tog, 1 dc into each of next 4 sts; rep from *. 40 dc remain.
Round 22: * dc2tog, 1 dc into each of next 3 sts; rep from *. 32 dc remain.
Round 23: * dc2tog, 1 dc into each of next 2 sts; rep from *. 24 dc remain.
Rounds 24-26: 1 dc into each st of previous round.
Round 27: * 2 dc into next st, 1 dc into each of next 3 sts; rep from *. There are 30 dc.
Round 28: 1 dc into each st of previous round.
Chick head has been completed. With wadding, stuff well chick head.
Round 29: * 2 dc into next st, 1 dc into each of next 4 sts; rep from *. There are 36 dc.
Round 30: * 2 dc into next st, 1 dc into each of next 2 sts; rep from *. There are 48 dc.
Round 31: * 2 dc into next st, 1 dc into each of next 7 sts; rep from *. There are 54 dc. ***

crochet chick - stuffed head

Change colors.
Rounds 32 and 33: with white yarn work 1 dc into each st of previous round.
Round 34: with pink yarn work 1 dc into each st of previous round.
Rounds 35 and 36: with white yarn work 1 dc into each st of previous round.
Round 37: with green yarn work 1 dc into each st of previous round.
Rounds 38 and 39: with white yarn work 1 dc into each st of previous round.
Round 40: with pink yarn work 1 dc into each st of previous round.
Rounds 41 and 42: with white yarn work 1 dc into each st of previous round.
Round 43: with green yarn work 1 dc into each st of previous round.
Rounds 44 and 45: with white yarn work 1 dc into each st of previous round. There are 54 dc.
Round 46: with pink yarn work * dc2tog, 1 dc into each of next 7 sts; rep from *. 48 dc remain.
Cut pink yarn. Stuff well. Continue to work with white yarn, stuffing chick body at the same time.

Round 47: * dc2tog, 1 dc into each of next 4 sts; rep from *. 40 dc remain.
Round 48: * dc2tog, 1 dc into each of next 3 sts; rep from *. 32 dc remain.
Round 49: * dc2tog, 1 dc into each of next 2 sts; rep from *. 24 dc remain.
Round 50: * dc2tog, 1 dc into next st *; rep from *. 16 dc remain.
Round 51: dc2tog 8 times. 8 dc remain.
Cut yarn and fasten off.

Boy chick. Work as GIRL CHICK until to ***. Continue to work Body as GIRL CHICK from round 32 to end, but change colors as follows: 2 rounds with white yarn, 4 rounds with light blue yarn, 6 rounds with white yarn, 3 rounds with light blue yarn and continue with white yarn to end.

Wings

With hook and yellow yarn make a magic ring. Into this ring work as follows:
Round 1: 6 dc. Pull yarn to close ring.
Round 2: * 2 dc in next st of previous round, 1 dc in in next st of previous round; rep from *. There are 9 dc.
Round 3: * 2 dc into next st, 1 dc into each of next 2 sts; rep from *. There are 12 dc.
Round 4: 1 dc into each st of previous round.
Round 5: dc2tog 6 times. 6 sts remain.
Rounds 6-8: 1 dc into each st of previous round.
Fasten off. Cut yarn leaving a long end.

Feet

With hook and orange yarn make a magic ring. Into this ring work as follows:
Round 1: 6 dc. Pull yarn to close ring.
Round 2: * dc into next st, 1 dc into each of next 2 sts; rep from *. There are 8 dc.
Rounds 3-5: 1 dc into each st of previous round.
Round 6: * dc2tog, 1 dc into each of next 2 sts; rep from *. 6 sts remain.
Rounds 7-9: 1 dc into each st of previous round.
Fasten off. Cut yarn.

Scallop border

With hook and white yarn ch56 and, starting from 3rd chain from hook, work 1 htr and 1 tr, * (1 tr and 2htr) into next ch, miss 2 ch, 1 dc into next ch **, miss 2 ch, (2htr and 1 tr) into next ch; rep from * across row, ending at **. Fasten off. Cut yarn.

Ribbon

With hook and pink yarn make a magic ring. Into this ring work as follows: ch3, 3 tr, 1 dc, ch3, 3 tr, ch3, 1 ss. Pull yarn to close ring. Fasten off. Cut yarn.

Boy’s bow tie

With hook and lime yarn make a magic ring. Into this ring work as follows: ch6, 4 dtr, ch5, 2 dc, ch5, 4 dtr, ch5 and 1 dc. Complete with a round of ss. Pull yarn to close ring. Fasten off. Cut yarn.

Girl’s bow

With hook and pink yarn work as BOY’S BOW TIE, then for ribbon ch17 and, starting from 3rd ch from hook work 2 htr, 1 dc into each of next 13 ch, 3 htr into last ch. Complete with a round of ss. Fasten off. Cut yarn.

Sew the two parts to create a Bow.

Crest

With orange yarn make a little tassel, open it to obtain a half-circle and fix it with hair-spray.

Hair

With orange wrap yarn several times around 4 fingers of one hand, pull it out and sew to head top.

 

FINISHING CHICK DECORATIONS

Join the different parts, as shown in Picture below, to create two chicks.

Sew white scallop border around lower yellow part edge. With yarn needle and orange yarn embroider in stem st the beak. Sew black beads to create eyes. Complete girl chick with bow, hair, and ribbon.
