Halloween candy jars, your crochet spooky covers

The scariest expressions to prepare for the ritual of trick-or-treating on the night of October 31. Here come the pumpkin orange Halloween candy jars, crocheted with our Asian yarn. With these simple ‘spooky’ covers you can decorate jars, glasses, mugs, and any kind of can you have around the house. We have made them in two standard sizes, large and small, but you can easily adapt them to the measurements of the cans you will use.

Make your own candy jar covers

Prepare materials and go over the stitch to use

To make the project you will need

How much yarn: Asian yarn, 1 ball for each of the following two colors: orange and black.
Hook: a 4.50mm crochet hook
Sewing needle: yarn needle with rounded point
Other items: black felt; fabric glue

 

The stitches we will use instead will be

  • Using crochet hook: chain (ch); slip stitch (sl st); double crochet (dc).
    Ridge double crochet back: work 1 dc inserting hook into back loop only of previous row (= 1 RdcB).
  • Using needle: stem stitch and straight stitch for embroidery.

Make covers

Small jar, 7cm in diameter

With crochet hook and orange yarn work a magic ring.
1st round: 6 dc into this ring, end with a ss into first st. Pull yarn to close ring.
2nd round: inc 1 st (= 2 dc into same st) in each st of previous round, end with a ss into first st (= 12 dc).

3rd round: * inc 1 st, 1 dc; rep from * all round, end with a ss into first st (= 18 dc).
4th round: * inc 1 st, 2 dc; rep from * all round, end with a ss into first st (= 24 dc).
5th round: * inc 1 st, 3 dc; rep from * all round, end with a ss into first st (= 30 dc).
6th round: * inc 1 st, 4 dc; rep from * all round, end with a ss into first st (= 36 dc).

7th round: 1 RdcB into each st of previous round.

Continue to work round of dc in a continuous spiral (= without ending each round with a ss) for 8cm. Fasten off.

Large jar, 9cm in diameter

Work as Small Jar until the end of round 6. Now, continue as follows.
7th round: * inc 1 st, 5 dc; rep from * all round, end with a ss into first st (= 42 dc).
8th round: 1 RdcB into each st of previous round.
Continue to work round of dc in a continuous spiral (= without ending each round with a ss) for 10cm. Fasten off.

Small black circles

Make 2: one for nose on large jar and one for eye on small jar. With crochet hook and black yarn work a magic ring. Now work 8 dc into this ring, end with a ss into first st. Pull yarn to close ring. Fasten off.

Large black circles

Make 2 for large jar eyes. With crochet hook and black yarn work a magic ring.
1st round: 8 dc into this ring, end with a ss into first st.
2nd round: inc 1 st (= 2 dc into same st) in each st of previous round (= 16 dc), end with a ss into first st. Pull yarn to close ring. Fasten off.

Mouth

With crochet hook and black yarn ch30. Fasten off.

 

Finishing your own candy jar covers

With yarn needle and black yarn, sew eyes, nose and mouth on jars, as shown in picture below. For a small jar cut a little triangle from black felt and secure it as nose. Complete Motifs with embroideries in stem stitch and in straight stitch, using black yarn.
