The knitted waistcoat is the most iconic and instagrammed garment of 2020-2021 winter season. Short or maxi, oversized or fitted, striped or checked, it can interpret all styles. Whether you are an expert with knitting needles and balls or a beginner, with our knitting step by step you can work your personal model! Are you ready to start?

Essential but effective!

Square shape, edged armholes and two small pockets on the front: this is the trendy waistcoat, ready to be knitted!

Instructions are given for size: UK 10/12 – US 6/8 – EU 36/38

For each larger size, add approx 2cm more in width to Back and 1cm more to each Front and work 2cm more in height (1cm before armhole and 1 cm after). Use one more ball of yarn for each size up.

What you need

Get the necessary materials. You will need:

9 balls of 50g (83m) of Nuovo Irlanda yarn (100% Pure Virgin Merino Wool – machine washable) in your favourite colour. We have chosen pink shade!
A 5.00mm circular needle 80cm long
A 5.00mm needle to cast off shoulder stitches
Yarn needle with rounded point
1 stitch-marker
1 stitch-holder

We’ve chosen circular needles and we use it for both back and forth rows and rounds. The stitches you will be practice are:

  • K3,P3 rib for borders
  • garter stitch for main piece
  • stocking stitch for the pockets

Before starting a project with knitting needles, it is very important to check the tension of the work. If it differs from stated one, you must adjust the number of stitch and needles to the centimeters or change the thickness of needles.

This is the tension for our waistcoat:

15 sts and 27 rows measure 10cm square over g st with 5.00mm (no. 6) circular needle.
